How to fix a Craftsman Eager-1 6.5hp pushmower?

Got mower out for the spring. Replaced oil, gas, blade just fine. Started to mow and the blade came off. Flipped mower up and reattached blade. As I did this gas flowed down the mower. After realizing my mistake, I fliped it back and dried off as much as I could. Started after a few cranks but did not reach full speed. Smoke came out of the exaust for some time then cleared up. Still did not reach full speed. Left it for some time. Tried to restart it with new gas and spark plug. Starts but sputters and never reaches full speed. Please help! Can't figure this one out!

Can you tell me what is wrong with this mower because it starts up runs a second or two then stops. Oil and gas levels appear adequate. Adjusted side lever (choker/throttle?) but does not seem to make a difference. Ocassionally ran better but stopped last week. The spark plug was cleaned also.

If the blade came off with the engine running it may have caused the flywheel key to partially shear. With aluminium block engines the weight of the blade is part of the flywheel action. Without a blade the engine can kick back and damage the key. A partially sheared key will throw the timing off and the engine will not run right.
