Can tipping over a freezer make it stop working?

In the process of spring cleaning I had the bright idea to flip over our chest freezer to clean out dust, lint and spider webs. After that it no longer worked. Someone told me you never do that because you let refrigerant into the wrong side of the compressor. Is this true? And, is it repairable?

No, it's not true. Leave it standing upright for at least 12 hours switched off...it should work after that
