My till says closed how do i change this to open???

We have just purchased a brand new Samsung ER-290 and are experiencing great difficulty programming it. I have studied the user manual and I think I have got the hang of it however it now just keeps saying closed and every time I try and do anything with it, it displays the error message E1 How do I change this to open so we can use the till

'CLOSED' on the display means no one is logged on to make sales on the register. you need to use your clerk button to log on. Some versions have clerk letters, so if you have buttons just marked 'A' or 'B' or 'C' etc then they are one touch logons, so just press one to sign in. If you have a button marked CLERK or CLERK# or CLK# then you sign in by PIN number, so try the default: press 1 then CLERK
