gearbox?

my gearbox wont let me go into first or second can, anyone tell me why that is and if their is a quick solution?as it is stuck on the side of a road..

We assume it's a manual g/box so can you get the car rolling then put it into 3rd? otherwise couldn't it be reversed off the road or towed?
