If your machine is like my Zanussi FL828 it won't have brushes. The brushes are carbon blocks that transfer electrical current to the motor's rotor. They should be on a (plastic) block on the motor's case at either the belt pulley end or the other. The block should have wires leading to it from the main control unit of the machine. With the motor removed it should be obvious. If it isn't obvious then you've got an induction motor which will not have brushes.
This being the case your problem is most likely caused by an old faulty capacitor not the motor.
Hi sharon, if you need to change the brushes you will need to remove the motor from the machine then you can see the brushes on each side of the motor with one wire connected to them.
