Why does my car race when accelerator pressed?

I have recently bought a Peugeot 206 1.4 year of manufacture 2002. I am only a learner driver but I have had loads of lessons and I know the engine shouldn't make such a racket when I only lightly put my foot on the accelerator. This is really putting me off and making me nervy when i'm driving and I end up stalling the car because i'm scared of pressing it too much. Does anyone know what this could be and can it be stopped.

Sounds as if you have a throttle control problem.

If your car has a throttle cable from the accelerator pedal to the control under the bonnet it sounds as if the cable is sticking. If so it may be possible to free it off by lubricating it thoroughly, otherwise a new cable could be the answer.

If your car has the later "fly by wire" electronic control at the accelerator pedal, there could be a problem with that, and the plug-in unit may need replacing with a new one.
