Singer sewing machine: How do I know if the needle is in the right way?

Machine is threaded right but stitches still missing/putting in longs stitches even on stitch length 2 with tension on 4 (sewing cotton)
It's driving me mad a ten min job is taking ages!
How do I know if the needle is in the right way?
Thanks

If you have a drop in bobbin the needle will fit in flat to back, if you have a side loading bobbin the flat side faces left, if you have a front loading bobbin the needle will be flat to back, if the machine is missing stitches it may need retiming.
