What engine is it ?????.
Check the water pump impellor is ok as they have been known to break off the shaft.faulty thermostat?,faulty expansion bottle cap?.head gaskets are also a known issue!.

i have just been told it might be the head cracked is this possible

sounds like head gasket gone and pressure vale in header tank letting water out
