This sounds like the mechanism is broken. But you can manually open the door using some wire. From the side of the door, thread the wire through and around the centre bolt (when looking from the side you will see what looks like 3 pins - the centre one is the locking pin). Hook the wire around this - and then pull. The pin needs to be pulled to the right to open the door.
