It won't pick up the lower thread and once I finally manage to get it all threaded it keeps breaking the top thread, sometimes it will work for a half metre or so, other times it will go for only a couple of inches before it breaks.

What could be wrong with it?

If it won't pick up the bottom thread and you have checked that you have a good needle in the correct way round, then the chances are you may need to retime the machine, if you type my email address as you say it not as you see it I will attach instructions but remind me of your machine.
