I have a k reg escort which when you turn the light stalk to sidelights you get dipped beam then when you turn it to what should be dipped beam you get sidelights I have proved it isnt the switch itself by substituting it for another one from another car but now I am baffled any ideas anyone????

I had the same issue and went through 2 light stalks - turned out that it was corrosion in the rear of the fusebox. A common problem to the MK5 escort I was told by my local auto electrician.
