how can i fix my vw golf's starting problem?

so i have a 85 vw golf fuel injected that wont stay started. it starts but dies. whats wrong with it?

before u do any of the above....im guessing its the mk1 gti or mk2??
when u switch ignition on...listen for the fuel pump priming...if u here a buzz sort of noise for a few seconds pump is fine.
next option & very little checked.....rotor arm & distributor cap....even if they look good....change the rotor arm at least as they contain a small resistor which does break down.

Not sure about your car, but I had this problem with a Vauxhall in the 1980's. Think it was the ballast resistor in the coil. The cure was a new coil.
