How do I remove the broken handle from the spade and how do I secure the new handle?

Last time I bought a spade handle it came with an aluminium rivet - drill out the old rivet - fit the handle snugly as you can - drill hole for new rivet - bash new rivet tail with a big hammer with the head against some sort of solid metal anvil.
