how can I cure my mountfield sp470 from stopping after a few minutes?

the priming bulb inflates as expected but after short period engine 'hunts' and stops.
Mountfield SP470 with briggs & stratton engine . out of guarantee but hardly used.

Hunting is due to lean mixture, if this is the engine with the carb on top of the fuel tank it may well be the diaphram between tank and carb
