How do I remove the carburetor from the fuel tank on my 3.5 hp briggs?

I have an older pressure washer from the early 1990's with a 3.5hp Briggs & Stratton motor. The motor will not start unless I use starting fluid in the spark plug hole. Once the starting fluid is burned the motor quits. I pull the plug and the plug is dry. I tried to take the carburetor off and it appears to be attached to the fuel tank. How do I separate the carb from the fuel tank?

You have to remove the entire tank/carb assy from the engine, then split them.

On vertical crank engines, it's easy - one bolt just in front of the filler, and one on the front of the tank.

On horizontal crank engines, in theory it's easy - 2 manifold bolts and one under the tank, BUT you will find that you can't get to one of the manifold bolts to unscrew it. Briggs make s tool for this, but you may have to make something.
