My piaggio zip 50 was going along all fine then the engine just died. It keeps doing it now, can't go more than 600 metres or so without stopping. It cuts out very suddenly, and unpredictably and with no warning, even when it seems to be going strong. It will restart ok though. Its five years old, but had a new exhaust and lots of money spent on it just over a month ago to get it through its mot, so should be ok?

it might be a carb blocked or it needs a new plug or its over heating or a problem with the rev limiter ht lead

sounds like the engine is seizing up to me does it start again after a few minutes after it has stopped (engine cools down a bit)if you have just had an expansion chamber race type exhaust fitted this is very likely ,as most people do not re jet the carb after fittng the exhaust and that makes it run weak and hot which causes the seizure.also it could be a problem with the oil pump/air in the oil pump or the oil pump dtive belt which is common for breaking on these piaggios,i would not have said it was the spark plug as although they do fail often they do not clean themselves and start working again often !!much much more likely the engine is seizing up as i said i bet it does it after a bit of a thrashing or when its going up hill ?let me know and i will try to help further ok jenny ,take care adam

Sounds like the spark plug. cheap to change.Also a bad elec connection could cause this.
