You do not say the make or model of the machine.
Switches usually fail permanently open or permanently closed - the way they're made makes them difficult to repair although it can sometimes be done - the repair seldom lasts long.
If your switch is defective you may do best by replacing it - be sure to make a careful note of the wiring scheme before you disconnect things.
