briggs & stratton 375?

when trying to start there is a terrific pull back on the cord some times, not an actual back fire, but as if it is to far advanced how can i rectify this problem as i can't see any way of altering the timing.

Several reason it will do this.

1. Engine overfilled with oil

2. Has been stored end up causing oil to seep into the compression chamber

3. Blade is loose

4. Blade is not fitted to mower

5. Bend in crankshaft

6. Flywheel locking key broken or dislodged
