Why doesn't my telephone doesn't ring properly?

I have a pair of Philips Cordless telephones. One is a base station unit which plugs into the phone socket the other is a slave unit which doesn't.

When I receive a call the phone does not ring properly. It is as if there isn't enough power coming down the phone line to trigger a proper ring. I get a very weak attempt at the sound which the phone is set to make. (You can choose from several ring tones. It doesn't matter which I choose. None "play" properly when the phone rings.)

Why might the phone not ring properly?

It sounds like you may have a ring trip, do you have any extensions connected to your master socket? If yes then try plugging a normal telephone in to the master socket and disconnect the extensions. If line rings O.k at master socket with extensions dis off then there is a problem with your internal wiring which is causing a ring trip.

It could be a number of things.

Either there is aproblem with the actual unit itself. Maybe the battery.

Or the telephone socket which you are plugging it into is not working correctly.

If you open the socket by unscrewing the 2 fixing screws, you should see a small component board in the socket.

On this board there will be a barrelled shape component called a capacitor. This barrell shape component is the part of the socket which generates ring voltage.

You may need to try another socket.

First of all is the problem with both handsets or just one? If it's just one, it's the handset. Alternatively, if you are in the UK there is a thing called REN that limits the nmber of phones that you can put on a line. Do you have other phones plugged in? If so reduce the number and try again. Finally, try an ordinary phone on the line. If it rings OK, its your base astaion. If it doesn't ring OK its the phone line.
