my piano soft pedal wont work?

the soft pedal on my knight upright piano built in 1973 wont work. whats wrong ?
richard t jones, June 2010
Remove the bottom panel under the keyboard, and check that the vertical push rod at the end of the 'soft' pedal arm is located in the hole of the bracket of the hammer rest at the top of the rod. There will also be a nut on the top of a short metal rod that connects the actual pedal to the arm. This should be adjusted so that there is no gap between the top of the push rod and the hammer rest bracket
