Pfaff 1471 pressure bar slow?

My Pfaff 1471 pressure bar is slow in coming down and now will not keep pressure on the fabric as I sew. I have tried oiling the bar but it didn't help for long. Some suggested to use WD40. If you tried WD40, did it work for long? Did you need to replace the pressure bar? Did you figure out what causes this problem?

My Pfaff 919 Hobbymatic was doing the same thing. I have never had a days trouble with this machine, but all of a sudden the presser bar was not holding pressure, and I need to start my Christmas sewing 2010. I cleaned my machine and oiled the lower part of the shaft but I was afraid to oil the thrust pin, (upper shaft) since my handbook says "not to oil my machine". I have been searching the internet all evening trying to find parts & repair diagrams to try to determine whether the presser bar needed replacing and if I could fix it myself. I am thrilled I discovered your comments, a little WD40 on a Q-tip freed my presser bar right up. Praise the Lord and thank you for posting

I had same problem. Took it to sewing machine doctor. $20.00 fix.

Hello Dianne,
The presser bar is a very tight fit indeed and you should only use the finest oil which is WD40, the existing grease or oil resisdue that was put on at manufacture has probably congealed although you may not be able to notice it, you should never need to replace the presser bar, release the pressure completely spray the oil or even leave it overnight and the work the presser bar up and down and it should free off nicely.
