how do I sort out the tension on my old singer sewing machine?

I have inherited an old converted singer sewing machine, it runs perfectly,I have sorted the bottom tension out, but I cant get the top tension right. It seems ok when I thread it, but when I go to use the machine, the thread catches and breaks, can anyone advise me as to what I am doing wrong please?

Hello Eileen,
First check the needle plate in case there is any damage, very old machines will have some wear where the needle goes in and you can end up with sharp edges, top tension if it is numbered should be about 4 or 5, if that does not cure it, make sure as well that the needle is in the correct way round, you did not say what model you had unfortunately, the flat spring on top of the shuttle could also have a sharp edge but try the above first.
