My hotpoint wm54 washing machine failed to unlock it's door after completing a wash cycle last night. I ended up opening the top and with power off releasing the electric latch from inside manually. The machine now appears dead, I suspect the latch is failed in the unlocked position. Is this conceivable; would this mean simply replacing the electric lock?

Yes, this is highly possible, before you get a new one double check the fuse & power to the machine, if this is ok then try a new door interlock.
