How can I check the strimmer ignition??

I need to check the spark inginition on a McCulloch strimmer. What is the best way to do this.
I have removed the spark plug and then connected the plug lead, then laid the plug body against the metal casing and pulled the starter. I do not get a spark. Am I doing this correct?? What else could I do??

I've got the same problem and have just found that the HT lead to the plug from the coil is broken where it goes into the casing. (Design fault) Have dismantled as much as possible but can't get the centrifugal clutch off to get at the coil, so have given up and am going to buy a new strimmer!!!
