indicaters intamitant falt on r reg fiesta?

hi there
my mum has a ford fiesta r reg 1000 cc ecotech
when she indicates right, sometimes the indicates stop flashing and she cancels the indicator and re indicates and the same happens again.
all the bulbs work when i asked her to put the hazard lights on and walk round the car so i assumed it could be the flasher unit.
she called ford and they said that the car dosent have a flasher unit and suggested it could be a relay (which i thought was a flasher unit) a switch (which i assume is the indicator stick on the steering column) or a switch over pin (i have no idea what is meant by this)

any ideas?
thanks

The problem will almost certainly be the indicator stalk switch, easy to replace, remove the plastic shroud around the steering column, the switch is held in with one screw and two plugs, it also contains the flasher relay plus the hazard switch
