How do I replace a pull starter cord on a Honda generator?

I am stuck in the middle of no where in a 30ft travel trailer with an old Honda generator & the day after my husband left to go back to pack up our house in KY, I pulled the generator to start it & the cord broke off in my hand. I am in Texas & it is over 100 deg here-I NEED the airconditioner! A neighbour came & tied an old rope to the frayed end. After filling it each time I have to re-start it & because the remaining rope is SO short, it usually takes anywhere from 35-50 pulls before it starts. I finally went to an auto part store & found that a replacement starter rope/handle assembly cost $3.59....problem is, I am afraid to take it apart & have NO CHANCE of starting it again. I have no manual & I have NO experience, SOMEONE PLEASE help me!!!!
