shock absorbers?

do i need to compress the springs to change front shock absorbers on a 1986ish volkswagon passat and are there any problems that i may incure thanks

not 100pcent sure normally with struts you do but my 84 audi wich shares some of ure running gear there a insert wich you dont need to compress for , ether way compressors arnt expencive and a haynes book is real helpfull
