Have undone all appropriate fixings but seem unable to fully free gearbox from from engine, deparates to a gap of 1 inch but will not travel any further.

If you have definately undone all of the bolts from the bell housing to the engine,it,s probably stuck on the spiggot bearing,common fault the first motion shaft wears and runs oval on the bearing so it sticks,only way to remove the gearbox is broot force im afraid.
