They are a great machine and give very few problems.
The most common reason for error on these registers is when someone presses the cashier button and logs themselves out of the machine.
If you can get numbers on the display when typing a price, but you hear the error beep when pressing a department, then this is usually the cause.
in REG mode, press CLEAR then 1 then CASH# (top right corner button)
This will sign on cashier#1
If you cannot even see any numbers on the display when typing them on the numeric pad, you probably need a new membrane in the keyboard.
If you have an amount on the display, but can't start a new sale, you may have under-tendered. Press ST (SUBTOTAL), then type the amount on the display, then TL (CASH).
