I have a C5 Exclusive with a similar problem. The light initially comes on but flickers and goes out after a random time of a few minutes to half an hour. I was quoted over £600 to replace the unit by Citroen! Apparently these lights "never" fail - hahaha.

Does anyone know if it is possible to replace this gas bulb with a regular bulb?

are you sure it is not a Xenon gas discharge bulb, if it is it will use a balist unit to create the high voltage for the bulb. there are 2 balist units 1 for each headlight. you might have a faulty one.
