1998 VW Sharan CL -Auto -2ltr- 66k miles -petrol?

Fuel consumption seem high, gearbox nice and smooth, driver easy on the throttle, seems like lots of revs before changing up to 4th gear, almost like it will stay in 3rd until going downhill then up to 4th but the slightest slope, down the gear goes. Generally difficult to keep it 4th gear. I driven for 40 years many autos but can't see round this problem.

All shift points are controlled by electronics. Speed sensor, throttle position, load sensor (MAF) and range switch. Normal to shift into top on light throttle about 40 MPH will be later with throttle. The shifts are adaptive and vary so cannot be exact. Check live data to see what is happening. An ATF change will NOT cure this.

when this happened on my '97 sharan, i had the transmisson fluid changed and this worked for me, while having it done, spoke to techie, who said if fluid change did not work, then possibly looking at having g/box stripped down, as could be gearing inside wearing out, common fault on these g/boxes. Good Luck.

hope it helps, August 2010
