rules on private driving in a van with a tacho?

I am looking to buy a van, (for my own private use) I see several fitted with a tacho. Does this have to be used when I am using it privately? Can it be removed?

check with DVLA,you may be able to get exemption. I know someone who has a lorry type horse box with a tacho, but is exempt from having to use it.
