My Uniden BT905 Cordless phone has a new battery pack installed. The unit held a charge for only 4 hours-then failed
to operate. It has been charged for at least 12 hours. Shouldn't
that be enough to use the new battery pak?

Sounds as if you got a bad battery. I just installed a new Ni-Cad battery in a Panasonic cordless phone charger it for the 9 hours by the instructions and it has been working for the past 5 days without a problem. Battery Barn on the internet has been a major help with all kinds of batteries.
