My clothes are coming out of the machine smelling dirty. Why is this?

Sometimes my clothes come out of my Hotpoint washing machine smelling worse than when I put them in? Why is this happening?

you need to do boil washes to kill the bacteria in your machine.only problem is once smell is in there its very hard to get rid of
