I had the same problem on a 910. Using a Torx screw driver it's possible to remove the case and get access to the motherboard. To access the screws gently lift the ends of the little rubber strips either side of the loudspeaker vents. On mine the little contact breaker (which lives on the motherboard directly under the on/off button) had dislodged, in fact one of it's tines had broken off so I used a minute strip of masking tape to hold it in place. It's a fiddly job so work on a clean, flat surface. The repair lasted the whole of my three week holiday in France. It needs doing again now though because the masking tape has dislodged and I'm therefore looking for a replacement contact breaker which must cost pennies and I think is probably standard on other devices, not just specific to Tom Tom. The cheapest repair I found online was £54.
