how do i replace rear brake pads on transporter van?

I've got the old pads out, reservoir cap is off, hand brake is off but can't get piston to go back far enough to fit new pads. Do I have to adjust hand brake mechanism?

are you winding in the piston?there is a tool available on the market which winds these in,some are r/h and some l/h threads
