My Navman iCN 610 won't work with the 12v adaptor but will with the mains?

Is there a battery inside which has depleted and won't charge with the 12V or mains? Can get it to work direct from the mains. Help please. Incidentally it's not the original 12V adapter although the red light comes on.

There is no battery inside. The adapter for car battery has a fuse inside or the contact may be loose.
