If it is the original Renault cable it will have a semi-automatic self-adjusting mechanism on the cable up up near the engine compartment bulkhead. This has to be checked and reset regularly, it is a pretty rubbish system.
Either buy (£20 from Halfords etc.) or borrow the Haynes manual for your car to get instructions and pictures on this and many other maintenance and repair tasks, or take the car to an independent Renault specialist (preferably NOT a main dealer as they will often charge a one hour minimum for labour on a job that takes only five minutes).
It is simple to do, should not even require any tools, but I no longer have my Laguna or the Haynes manual, so cant type up the instructions.
