From your description it sounds as if it is the older K11 model (92-97). If this is the case, the only way to get at it is via the speedo. This isn't a hard job to do. Should only take 30 mins top for an amatuer.
What you will need to do is remove the battery and take out the battery shelf (what the battery sits on). Remove the air filter housing, this is connected by two bolts and one screw tightening coupling clamp. once these are both removed you will see the speedo cable coming down from your dash to the top rear of the gearbox where the speedo is. To remove the speedo you will first need to remove the retaining screw which is at the rear of the join and then unscrew the cable. Pull the cable up and away from the top of the speedo. To take the speedo out of the gearbox your best bet is to use a pair of mole grips across the top and then simply lift up. If you are having difficulty pulling it up, it means you haven't got the angle right. As soon as you have the right angle it will come out without any problems. With the speedo out, when leaning over from the front of the car and looking down into the gearbox through the hole, you will see what looks like a shelf, fill your gearbox up to about the lip of the shelf. Putting everything back is just a reversal of this.
Remember to empty the oil before putting new oil in!
