What is making my ford escort creak?

I have a 1998 Ford Escort GTi with 72000 miles. At low speeds when turning the wheel a loud "creaking" noise is heard coming from the engine compartment. It tends to be louder a lower speeds and on hotter days. What is causing this and how do I stop it?
