gas bottles?

hi can a gas bottle be replaced after it has been disconnected.
my son moved our fridge freezer and the pipe cam away he sealed it up but we did smell gas

If he broke the pipework off the compressor? then it will need regassing assuming the pipe can be fixed?.expensive repair with no guarantee of sucess!
