did you check for the plastic/nylon pins in steering column that hold inner and outer column together are still there and not missing or loose. [they are there to allow column to collapse by shearing them off in the event of accident allowing inner column to slide in outer column]

I admire your tenacity for repairing your fault,if you cant feel any play in your c.v joints/column the only way is to try another one from a scrappy to rule out these parts.
