Glovebox stuck shut on my 2001 Citroen Xsara 1.6 SX?

Something nasty has broken inside the glovebox lid and it is now stuck shut no matter whether it is "locked" or "open". Tried gentle force and levering the lid to one side to no avail. Is there any way to get at the lid mechanics to mend it short of causing expensive damage? The box isn't that big anyway and there is nothing of value inside so am content to leave it unless someone has overcome the same problem!Mine can't be the first one to have broken! A local guy working for a Citroen dealer suggested trying to remove the operating toggle by somehow lifting the plastic hinge pin, which itself seems fixed, removing the toggle lever to gain sideways access to the metal bar which is either raised or lowered by the ignition key used to lock or unlock. I haven't been able to do this! HELP!
