If the mirror is electrically controlled then you can replace the mirror glass and the backing plate it is stuck to as one unit. The original (broken) mirror glass can be prised - firstly off the main centre swivel point (wear gloves) using a really wide bladed screwdriver if hand pressure does not work and then prise the mirror off the two adjustable swivel points - then lastly take off the two wires for the heating. To put the new unit in first make sure the mirror is pushed away from the vehicle. After that make sure the two adjustable swivel points are at their maximum extension (away from the mirror housing) - you cannot go too far because it it is made so that the thread adjustment just keeps 'clicking' as it goes past maximum. Attach the electric leads to the two feeds on the back of the mirror. Then you will need to first position the mirror with the side that has the two spring guides on it in to the housing with the other side of the mirror still proud of the housing. Use a long (extended if neccesary) screwdriver type handle with a (hex) 'u' shaped (4mm between the prongs) security bit in the end - place the 'u' bit behind the upper (nearest to the spring guides) adjustable swivel ball head (5mm diameter)and brace the screwdriver shaft against the bottom or side of the mirror housing so that you can then press the mirror glass (hard) against the pivot head and it will (eventually) pop into place - then do the same with the remaining adjustable swivel point. After that make sure the main centre (fixed) swivel ball is aligned with its socket in the housing and push the mirror home. Make sure you try and spread the load you apply to the mirror over as big an area as you can - do not use just the end of your fingers as the mirror may break with the pressure you have to apply.

Debz,

Halfords do replacement door mirrors for most cars, which you just stick over the original glass without having to remove it. Failing that you could maybe pick up a whole assembly, from you local scrap dealer probably cost around £25.

Good luck
