Hotpoint Aquarius WMA52 - drum overfills but won't start wash?

I have set the washer to program D 40degree wash on time saver. Press start & the drum 1/2 fills with water taking powder from drawer but no wash program starts. As soon as it stops filling the pre-wash light flashes but there is nowhere for me to set any pre-wash program. If I re-press start to begin pre-wash the drum fills with even more water & pre-wash light flashes again. Only way I can empty drum of water is to put it on fast spin.

I had different M/C but the principle is the same, remove the back cover of the M/C about half way up the drum you will see a plastic bottle, usually white, about 2" long, with small bore pipe to each end. Take it off and clean it out.

easy as that, the water level sensor uses this, if it or the pipe gets blocked with soap (this will probably only happen once in the lifetime of the M/C) the sensor does not know how much water is in the M/C and will not proceed until it does.
