Ken Shelton gives a great answer to this problem.

My notes to add to this are:

1. If you have rebuilt your carb, then follow Ken's directions, since you should have removed and cleaned out the carb adjusting screws/orifices. Otherwise . . .

2. Before changing the carburetor HI/LO settings, increase the idle slightly, as that may be your only problem. To do this , turn in (clockwise) the third carburetor adjusting screw that is not marked HI or LO.

3. Be careful not to damage the needle valves which are the carburetor adjusting screws. Try backing them out 1/2 turn first, then turn them back in as far as they go without too much resistance, then stop. They will probably give some slight resistance as you go back in past the original position they were in.

3. From this point, I only backed them out only 1 full turn from being screwed in, and followed Ken's directions from there, but I backed each screw out slowly as my first adjustment, then back in.

4. Initially, my fuel ine was split, so the chainsaw would run and then stop. It would be hard to start. After I replaaced the fuel line and cleaned the air filter, the saw worked great for a little while, then it started to give me pre-ignition while I was pull starting it. However, the timing is fixed and is not adjustable on many poulan models.

I recently bought a used Poulan 2000 Farmhand, and the c.i. info is obscured...can anyone tell me the cubit inch size of this chain saw? Mfg in 1996, I think.

hey i have the same poulan 2000 and had the exact same problem. take the cover off and drain the gas. then fish out the fuel filter and replace it.make sure your fuel lines are good and clear then shel start right up

1. Make sure your airfilter is clear.
2. Set the carb to the basic settings given in the book
3. Warm the engine
4. Adjust the low idle speed and mixture to give steady tickover
5. Adjust the high speed mixture. BUT! The carb adjustment can only be done with the air cover removed so set the high speed slightly lean. Once the cover is on it makes the mixture too rich and the engine eight strokes at full throttle. Not what the manual says but my saw is a 1983 and it is still fit. If I'm doing it wrong my engine would have died a few decades back.

The fuel line has a tendency to split on these saws which draws air into the fuel. That also makes the engine stop suddenly. Check all of the fuel line and replace it necessary - it's cheap.
These saws are the Sachs Dolmar 100, Austrian I think and probably why they work for so long.
Diaphragms are Walbro and have a very short life.

It could be your exhaust. Clean the spark arrestor and what ever parts of the muffler you can get to.

REV-UP MEANS LEAN MIXTURE [LESS FUEL THAN AIR]
CHECK LOW AND HIGH SPEED NEEDLE SCREWS
CHECK FUEL TANK BREATHER [SMALL OPENING IN FILLER CAP]
CHECK FUEL LINE TANK CARB.[COULD BE SUCKING AIR]
CHECK FUEL FILTER[A CLUNK TYPE CERMAIC]
CHECK CARB. FUEL PUMP DIAPHRAM FOR HOLE[OVERHAUL KIT HAS NEW RUBBER GOODS] CLEAN CARB. WITH PETRO BASED SPRAY
DO NOT SPRAY RUBBER GOODS CARB.DISASSBLY REQUIRED
CHECK CARB. TO ENGIN FOR TIGHTNESS [MAY HAVE AN AIR LEAK]
REAJUST LOW AND HIGH NEEDLE SCREW
GOOD LUCK
