how do you replace the starter on b&s?

i have have bad starter on a craftsman 14 horse riding mower. the mounting bolts for the starter are hidden behind the sarter gear. is there any way to remove the bolts without taking off the flywheel gear

Use an open ended wrench and loosen the bolts. Make sure you have a good fitting and strong wrench. It is a slow process but I have done it many times. You only get 1/4 turn at a time usually dependig on the room you have. Trust me, if you use a closed wrench it will get stuck due to the fact the bolts are very long and by the time you get it all the way unscrewed your wrench will be stuck around the bolt until you can manuever the starter from the engine. Putting them back in is even more fun!
