How do I find out what engine is in a VW?

My son has a 1991 VW Golf. I've looked at all the stickers on the hood and the doors and looked all over the internet trying to find a similar picture with the block numbers. It's probably right under my blind eyes, but how else can I find out? There is no book with this car either.

Got it ! It's a 1.8L. Right in between MVW and V5FWB6. Thank you very much.

The engine number will be in two places, stamped into the engine block at the end nearest the joint with gearbox and on the chassis data plate on the bonnet(hood) landing panel or your local VW dealership will be able tell from the chassis number the 17 letter & numbers on the data plate
