how can i fix my ford escort estate?

Hi, I would like to fix my boyfriends car as he is useless at getting these things done. It needs a new MOT but has rusted seals and is rusted in a couple of other places on the underside too. I'm pretty handy with things like this and we cant afford to get it done by a professional so would really appreciate any advice anyone could give me on the step by step process of how to to do this (as cheaply as possible). It is a ford escort ghia estate 1.8 petrol. Many thanks.

if the rust is at certain structural parts ie. sills, chassis, suspension mounts the body will have to be plated and you will need welding equipment, skills etc, which may turn out to be a big job and labour intensive, you will have to decide whether the motor is worth doing/repairing,or scrap the motor and get a new motor, good luck
