VW Golf GTI 8V 1997 Fuel pump problem??

I have just bought a VW GOLF GTI 8V off somebody, the only problem is, he stated the fuel pump is not working so therefor will not start?? He says that if I put a 'live' to it then it will? As I am a 22 year old female with no car experience...I have no idea what this means? Does anyone know of any prices or the best place to take the car for a new pump to be done... and what if it still does not work after it has been replaced? Is this common for this car, it is a 1997 (R reg) with only 79000 miles on the clock?

Any help would be amazing.

And how do I go about 'putting a live to it' ?

Thanks a lot

if you done know about cars "putting a live to something is asking for trouble" the fuel pump is in the petrol tank which pumps fuel from tank to the engine ,normally gain acces to pump by lifting rear seat bases .where there is a cover for pump . basically wot he means by "puting a live to it" is you take a wire from battery + terminal and put it to the + terminal of the pump ,this acts as a "bridge"and temporarily takes fuel pump solenoid ,fuse and wiring out of the equasion ,which is where the problem lies .i wouldnt advise doing this though . ask around a few people for reputable garages in your area or take it to the main dealer .hope the helps a little
